Generally speaking, endurance saddles are built with less skirting and therefore retain less heat. In competition the advantage of using an endurance saddle is simple: the horse carries less overall weight and for the horse, the saddle is cooler over an extended time.
Most experienced endurance riders don’t like horns on their saddles as they get in the way when ducking under trees or riding uphill. As well, most endurance saddles have a stirrup with a wider platform to keep the rider’s feet more comfortable over longer distances. The stirrups are generally hung underneath the rider instead of the typically more forward position to help the rider attain a centered riding position, or as others describe it, a dressage position. This configuration helps the horse work more efficiently. Rigging on endurance saddles should pull more from the center of the seat rather than straight down as in traditional Western saddle rigging. Western style rigging puts a lot of pressure in the front of the saddle - right behind the horse's shoulder blades. Ideally, endurance saddles should have a bulkless rigging system that lies flat under the rider's leg to eliminate chafing irritation. Questions? We want to know!
